The movie "Fragments of Palestine" portrays the lives of three young people from Palestine, Israel and the UK and their perception of the Israeli- Palestinian reality.

Rabea, 27 years old, was a resistance fighter for a Palestinian militant group from the City of Jenin, the Palestinian city most attacked during the second Intifada. Rabea decides to change the course of his resistance, thus, he lays down his rifle after seven years as a fighter and starts resisting using his art on a theatre stage. He joins the first acting school of the Jenin Freedom Theatre. Together with his colleagues and their mentor, Juliano Mer Khamis, they develop a powerful play which addresses their life under occupation. On a trip to different areas around Jenin he shares his past as a fighter and his future vision as an artist fighting for freedom.

Maya, 18 years old, is a young Israeli activist. After encountering a Palestinian girl at the age of 15, she decides to explore the reality of the conflict objectively. She becomes a political activist and rejects to serve in the army as a conscientious objector, which results in her arrest for 42 days in military prison. After being discharged Maya works as a tour guide for the Israeli Committee Against House Demolition (ICAHD), where she provides tourists and Israelis with an alternative perspective on the conflict. The movie tracks her on a tour and documents her efforts as an activist in the West Bank.

Jody Mcintyre, is an 18-year old disabled British activist from London. He joins the peaceful struggle against the occupation in the small village of Bil'in in the West Bank. Despite his disability, Jody is always at the forefront of the weekly demonstration against the Separation Wall which separates the Palestinian residents from most of their lands. Together with his friend and host father Mohammed Khatib and the residents of Bil'in, Jody guards the village at night, attempting to prevent the Israeli military from arresting the local youth.

The result of this work contributes to a brave and strong movie that allows the audience to see another view of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. It is the view of young people whose hopes remain high and fuels their fight to achieve a peaceful end to this long conflict.

"I am not here just to observe something like the UN observers or all this hundreds of thousands of NOG's that they have in Palestine to observe the situation. I want to make a difference. If it is a Palestinian boy or me going to jail I would rather I went to jail because I come out in a day. They will go to jail for six months and no one knows where they are and they are just children mainly.

I am just hoping we can directly do something. It's hard if it's a hundred soldiers and just a couple of activists, but still we have to try."

After finishing school Jody decided to travel to South America for three months on his own. While he was exploring the Amazon in 2008, Israel invaded the Gaza Strip. Jody, a quarter Lebanese himself, decided to interrupt his journey and come back to London. Back home he became involved in the protest movement and organized demonstrations calling for an end to the Israeli invasion. In the news he came across a campaign organized by George Galloway called "Viva Palestina". The politician organized the first aid convoy to the Gaza Strip, since no aid had been allowed in since the start of the invasion. More than 600 vehicles travelled from London to Egypt, ready to bring medicine, construction materials and food to the besieged people of Gaza.

By the time Jody heard about the organization, the convoy had already left England. He spontaneously booked a flight to Cairo and met the convoy in Rafah, near the Egyptian border with the Gaza Strip. Even though the Egyptians only allowed a few trucks through, Jody managed to join them. He spent twelve days in Gaza, a life changing experience. After returning to London, Jody decided to go back to Palestine to become involved in the non-violent resistance movement.

Once he was asked, "How did you meet your host family in Palestine?" he answered that he heard about demonstrations against the course of the wall in a village north of Ramallah called Bil'in, and when he reached there he met a man called Mohammed Khatib and asked him for a place to sleep. Jody stayed in Mohammad Khatib's house in the village for months, experiencing the daily life of the Palestinian people. After overstaying his visa he returned to London and signed up for university, ready to study political science. However, he left the program due to differences of opinion with his professors and decided to go back to Gaza. Again he managed to break through the blockade.

After returning to London he became involved in the students' protest. Today, Jody is active and highly involved in different activities fighting for equality, social justice and a peaceful future.

"As I said, I don't think I am special. If I changed anyone can do it. I am not saying it is easy, but it is doable. That gives me optimism. My own change inspirers me because I feel if I changed other people will, and the truth always wins. That's how my optimistic view on life is, in the end justice will happen, it is always like this, it is just the question of how long it will take."

Maya is an Israeli activist. She was born in the neighbourhood of Gilo in the south of Jerusalem, which, by international law, is regarded as an Israeli settlement, since it was established on privately owned Palestinian land. She went to a conservative school in Jerusalem and was convinced that "the Arabs want to drive all Israelis into the sea". She experienced the second Intifada in Jerusalem, the most attacked city in Israel. One day she witnessed a bus being blown up. At that time she started to play mind games: "Is it better to sit in the front of the bus if the terrorist comes from the back, or is the back safer when the explosion happens in the front of the bus?"

Death became an essential part of her life. Due to this harsh reality she felt the need to talk to Palestinians, since she realised that she had never spoken to them before and that she had no insight into their reality. Therefore she joined a dialogue group for Israeli and Palestinian girls in Jerusalem and for the first time she met the "other". Encountering these Palestinian girls turned her life upside down. A painful process began and she discovered that many things she had been taught did not quite represent reality. She tested her new discoveries at home and in school, and experienced very quickly how painful it can be if one stands up for a different view.

In school she was called "Arab hugger" and a "Self-hating Jew", and many problems also arose in her family due to her political shift. After educating herself she decided to refuse to do army service due to conscientious objections. In Israel men have to serve for three years and women for two. Maya met a group of young people who had the same political stand. She joined the December18th initiative (http://december18th.org/), a group of young Israelis who have decided to refuse to serve in the army due to conscientious objections.

On the day of her draft, Maya went to the base and refused to obey the first order they were given. She was sentenced on the spot and served 42 days in military jail, including a week in an isolation cell. After being freed she started to work for the "Israeli Committee Against House Demolition" as a tour guide. She is involved in many activities fighting for a peaceful coexistence between Palestinians and Israelis.

"I used to tell Juliano: I am happy because I have found a new path for resistance after having lost so much in the armed resistance. I lost my sister, lots of friends and beloved ones, and I think this chain of loss will stop here with the path of cultural resistance. But here came a day where I lost the leader - not just an element in the squad..."

At the age of 16 Rabea became a member of a resistant militant group in the City of Jenin, in the West Bank. Every night after his parents went to sleep he sneaked out, got his gun and went to see his group. In the morning he would return before any of his family was awake. After one year Israeli soldiers came to his house to arrest him. From that day he was unable to come home to see his family any more. He had to hide in caves, spend weeks without a shower, food became irregular, and he was constantly afraid of being caught by the Israeli soldiers.

After his parents discovered their son's engagement in the resistance, they were firmly opposed to it, as they did not want to lose him. Rabea spent seven years as a fighter in different groups. In 2008 the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas agreed to the truce with Israel. All fighters who put down their guns were promised pardons by Israel. After this political decision, most of the fighters, including Rabea, laid down their rifles. The condition for receiving amnesty from Israel was that the fighters had to stay in the Palestinian Security Compound in Jenin for 3 months. After that they were guaranteed free mobility. Rabea spent 2 years in the Security Compound and nothing happened. He did not receive amnesty, and therefore, he was still wanted by the Israeli army and feared being arrested or shot at any time.

In that period he came to the Freedom Theatre and joined the first acting class. The theatre was managed by Juliano Mer Khamis, a Palestinian- Israeli actor and film maker, who quit his career and came to Jenin to continue the work of his mother who had started the Theatre during the first Intifada in the late 1980s.

During his time in the armed resistance, Rabea lost many friends. He is the only one of his group who is not in prison or been shot dead by the Israeli army. In addition, he lost his sister who was shot when the army entered his house to arrest him. Until the present day there have been many problems between Rabea and his parents due to this loss.

In spring 2011, Juliano Mer Khamis was shot in front of the theatre by an unknown man. In the wake of this assassination Rabea and his colleagues received many threats. The demand was that the theatre, which is located in Jenin Refugee Camp, a conservative and poor area, had to be shut down. Despite this inner Palestinian conflict, Rabea is determined to continue as an actor. Today he doesn't condemn armed struggle but he has found a different path, the path of cultural resistance.
